Bank of New Hampshire Donates to Frisbie Memorial Hospital’s Reach Out and Read program

Rochester, New Hampshire – February 14, 2017 – Bank of New Hampshire is proud to support Frisbie Memorial Hospital with a $3,000 donation towards their Reach Out and Read program. Reach Out and Read is a nonprofit organization that trains and supports medical providers who give books to children, ages five months to six years, and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, promoting literacy is “an essential component to pediatric primary care.”

Frisbie’s Rochester Pediatric Associates, which is an official Reach Out and Read program site, promotes literacy by incorporating reading into routine care by giving new, developmentally-appropriate books to children at well-child exams. The office recently created a reading nook, with a bookcase and sitting area, for children to sit and read as they wait for the pediatrician. The bookcase is stacked with books generously donated by the Dover Public Library, Frisbie staff, and members of the community.

Through the Reach Out and Read program, parents learn new ways to stimulate their children’s literacy development, have more books in their home, and read to their children more. Each year, Reach Out and Read serves four million children across all 50 states. Data shows that, during preschool years, children served by Reach Out and Read score three to six months ahead of their non-Reach Out and Read peers on vocabulary tests.

“Bank of New Hampshire's support of Frisbie Memorial Hospital's Reach Out and Read program will help to improve and enhance the quality of life of the 1,300 families seen by the medical team at Rochester Pediatrics and help to reverse the educational crisis that exists in this community,” stated Joanne Livingston, Director of Volunteer Services for Frisbie Memorial Hospital.
