Every day regular people lose their hard-earned money to scammers. With instances of fraud becoming more widespread, it is important that you understand what you can do to keep your money and information safe.

Your responsibilities.

You play a key role in maintaining the security of your personal information. You are in charge of keeping your password, account numbers, and other account data confidential.

Keep your information secure by following these tips:

  1. Create a strong password and keep it a secret!
  2. Keep your browsers up-to-date with the latest defenses, like virus protection and malware alerts.
  3. If you receive a call from your bank, hang up and call the number on the back of your card.
  4. Be skeptical of unsolicited emails and texts with attachments or links. Think before you click!
  5. Never release personal information over the phone, mail, internet or via text message unless you initiate the contact or know who you’re dealing with.
  6. Do not leave your computer unattended while you are connected to online banking.

Did a fraudulent transaction post to your bank account? Did your online banking site look or act differently than normal in any way? Terms you should know
  • Malware – software that is intended to damage or disable a computer or systems
  • Social Engineering – the act of obtaining, or attempting to obtain, secure data by tricking an individual into revealing secure information
  • Firewall Protection – software programs designed to protect a network by preventing unauthorized users from gaining access or by monitoring transfers of information to and from the network
  • Anti-virus Protection – computer software used to prevent, detect, and remove malicious computer viruses
  • Hacker – a person who uses computers to gain unauthorized access to data
  • Virus – a piece of code that is capable of copying itself and typically has a detrimental effect, such as corrupting the system or destroying data
  • Phishing – computer-related fraud whereby criminals attempt to access an individual’s data electronically by posing as a legitimate business that you may deal with. 
  • Smishing – fraud whereby scammers sends text messages to a mobile device, trying to convince an individual to click a link which then infects their phone with a virus. 
  • Vishing – involves a scammer calling an individual to ask you for your personal data.

How to Report Fraud

If you suspect you are the victim of fraud, it is important that you report it to us immediately. The sooner you act, the sooner we can help. 

There are several ways you can report fraud:

  3. Visit your local BNH office

Be prepared to discuss the details surrounding the incident, including the timing and transaction information. To protect you, you may be asked to follow our escalation process for suspected computer viruses or malicious software, clean your computer and change your passwords.
